MAGNETIC PARTICLE TESTING (MT)

Course Content

Properties of magnetism, Principle of magnetism, magnetic fields, Hysteresis curve, permeability, retentivity, Coercive force reluctance; residual magnetism lines of force, AC DC Field distribution, testing, viewing conditions, detecting media; Light intensity, current requirements, interpretation and evaluation, acceptance levels; demagnetisation; practical exercises; methods of assessing sensitivity, reporting; instruction writing.

Course Duration : 40 hours

Course Objectives

1. To explain the theory of magnetism
2. To explain the Methods of magnetization, Types of equipment used for magnetization.
3. To explain the mediums used and their preparation, minimum concentration and light intensity required
4. To demonstrate practicals with different types of flaws.
5. To write clear instructions for testing and to prepare reports of the test performed.
6. To meet syllabus requirements for PCN Level 2

Entry Requirements (For Examination)

The minimum duration of training, which includes both theoretical and practical elements, is : Level 2 - 40 hours

The minimum duration for experience prior to or following success in the qualification examination is : Level 2 - 4 Months

ULTRASONIC TESTING (UT)

Course Content

Basic principles of sound; Various type of wave modes,behaviour of sound in a material, effect of sensitivity resolution,penetration of sound with different types probes, the flaw detector, calibration blocks/DAC blocks; use of angle beam probes for weld scanning, calibration of equipments; welding processes and weld defects; practical exercises on test specimens containing simulated flaws; examination of parent plate, butt welds, interpretation and evaluation; instruction writing

Course Duration : 120 hours.

Course Objectives

1. To explain the theoretical background of the techniques.
2. Familiarization of ultrasonic equipment,probes cables and connectors.
3. To carryout calibration of equipment
4. To locate and evaluate laminations
5. To scan welded plates & pipes with different defect.
6. To report on the location and size of defects in typical welded butt joints
7. To write clear instruction for testing.
8. To interpret code requirements.
9. To meet the syllabus requirements for PCN Level 2.

The minimum required duration of training, which includes both theoretical and practical elements, is: : Level 2 - 120 hours

The minimum duration for experience prior to or following success in the qualification examination is : Level 2 - 12 Months

PHASED ARRAY ULTRASONIC TESTING (PAUT) OF WELDS

Course Content

Introduction in PAUT, Basic Principals of PAUT ,Advantages Disadvantages of PAUT, Types of PAUT machines and PAUT probes , Equipment Parameter selection, Beam Shaping & Steering Dynamic Depth Forms, Digitization Principles, Types of Scans, PAUT machine familiarization, Development of Scan Plan, Data acquisition, Data Interpretation etc.

Course Duration : 120 hours

Course Objectives

1. To explain the theoretical background of the techniques & the PAUT machine characteristics
2. To explain the different types of probes and its application.
3. To calibrate PAUT equipment (Velocity, Wedge delay, Sensitivity, Encoder)
4. To Scan the plates and acquire the data.
5. To locate and evaluate defects using PAUT
6. To select the correct type of probe/ machine parameters to examine welded butt joints in steel plate
7. To report on the location and size of defects in typical welded butt joints
8. To interpret code requirements
9. To write instruction to carry out the test.
10. To meet the syllabus requirements for PCN Level 2

PENETRANT TESTING (PT)

Course Content

Principles of LPT, Types of dyes, Method of removal of excess penetrant, viewing conditions, equipment requirement, equipment and safety aspects; practical exercises; methods of assessing sensitivity, intepretation and evaluation, reporting, instruction writing.

Course Duration : 40 hours

Course Objectives

1. To explain the basic principles of penetrant inspection methods
2. To carry out penetrant inspection using solvent-removable processess
3. To demonstrate practicals with different type of flaws.s
4. To carry out evaluation of defects identified.s
5. To write clear and concise inspection instructions and test reportss
6. To meet syllabus requirements for PCN Level 2 s

TIME OF FLIGHT DIFFRACTION ULTRASONIC TESTING

Course Content

History of TOFD Development, Basic principles of TOFD,TOFD Advantages and Limitations, Equipment Parameter Selection, Depth Calculation, Time Calculation, PCS Calculation, Types of TOFD Scan, Equipment Used In TOFD, Digitalization Principles, Equipment Requirements, TOFD Depth, Ring-Time Issues And Errors, Interpretation and Evaluation, Applications

Course Duration : 80 days

Course Objectives

1. To explain the principle of TOFD, its advantages and disadvantages.
2. To explain the equipment parameters.

RADIOGRAPHIC FILM INTERPRETATION (WELDS)

Course Content

Principles of radiography Testing, Advantages and Disadvantages of Radiography testing, Properties of X- and gamma-rays; film selection; film processing and Films artifacts, factors controlling contrast and definition; X- and gamma-ray equipment; ionising radiation hazards; regulations; use of screens and filters; image quality indicators; defect depth location; castings; reporting.

Course Objectives

1. To explain the principle of radiography testing
2. To explain the X ray and gamma ray equipment and their application.
3. To explain the types of films and their characteristics.
4. To explain the processing parameters.
5. To interpret radiographs and to categories and size the defects
6. To meet the syllabus for PCN Level 2

Course Duration :

The minimum required duration of training, which includes both theoretical and practical elements, is:

• Level 2 - 56 hours

Entry Requirements (For Examination)

The minimum duration for experience prior to or following success in the qualification examination is:

• Level - not applicable

• Level 2 - 6 months

RADIOGRAPHIC FILM INTERPRETATION (WELDS)

Course Content

Weld defects and their components; viewing conditions; identification of radiographs; spurious indications and film artefacts; appreciation of radiographic principles and parameters of interpretation; standards for radiographic practice, interpretation tutorial; acceptance criteria.

Course Objectives

1. To explain the basic theory of X - and gamma radiography
2. To select film type and energy levels, select and prepare techniques for a given specimen
3. To state the theory of film processing and carry out practical dark-room work
4. To have a working knowledge of basic radiation safety (see note in Additional Information)
5. To plot and evaluate film characteristics (sensitometry)
6. To recognise film faults
7. To meet the syllabus requirements for PCN Level 2
